A long, flexible extension with a round shank on one end and a drill chuck on the other. The snake drill is fastened in the chuck of a drill motor, and a twist drill is installed in its chuck. This combination allows holes to be drilled in locations that are inaccessible to other types of drills.

A long, hydraulically operated boom with a man-carrying bucket on its end. A person can be lifted in the bucket of the cherry picker so he can work at a high location. They are used in aircraft maintenance for working on large airplanes. Cherry pickers are usually mounted on a truck so that they can be moved from place to place where they are needed.
Industry:Aviation
A long, narrow strip of cloth, paper, or steel with graduations of inches or millimeters marked along its edge.
Industry:Aviation
A long, narrow, tapered, round file. Rattail files are used for filing a radius in the corner of a cutout.
Industry:Aviation
A long, specially shaped, stainless steel tube mounted around the exhaust tail pipe of an aircraft reciprocating engine.
As the exhaust gases flow through the augmentor tube, they produce a low pressure in the engine compartment which draws cooling air into the compartment through the fins on the cylinders. Heat may be taken from the augmentor tubes and directed through the leading edges of the wings for thermal anti-icing.
Industry:Aviation
A long, tapered, cloth tube open at both ends. Its large end is supported and held open by a steel ring mounted in a bearing so it is free to turn. Wind socks are mounted on tall poles so they can catch the wind and stream out in the direction the wind is blowing.
Wind socks are normally made of vividly colored cloth and are used on airports and heliports to show the pilot of an arriving aircraft the direction from which the wind is blowing.
Industry:Aviation
A long-chord ring cowling whose trailing edge fairs smoothly into the fuselage or engine nacelle. NACA cowlings are used on the vast majority of modern radial engine installations.
The cooling air rams into the open front of the cowling and exits through an annular slot at the rear. This slot is often covered with adjustable cowl flaps to control the amount of cooling air allowed to flow through the engine. The airfoil shape of the cowling produces a forward aerodynamic force that more than compensates for the cooling drag of the engine.
Industry:Aviation
A longitudinal crack in a piece of wood caused by externally induced stress.
Industry:Aviation
A longitudinal member of a seaplane hull or float that forms the joint between the bottom and the side of the structure.
