A metal-cutting chisel whose cutting edge is in the shape of a diamond. A diamond chisel is used to cut V-shaped grooves in metal.
Industry:Aviation
A metal-cutting hand file that has curved teeth across its faces. Vixen files are used to remove large amounts of soft metal.
Industry:Aviation
A metal-cutting machine tool whose cutting faces are surfaced with tungsten carbide, tantalum carbide, or titanium carbide. These carbides keep their hardness and cutting ability even when they are extremely hot.
Industry:Aviation
A metal-cutting tool made by grinding a sharp edge onto a flattened portion of a hardened steel rod. A cold chisel is used to cut metal when the metal is cold.
Industry:Aviation
A metal-cutting tool turned in a drill press or a hand-held drill motor. A twist drill has a straight shank and spiraled flutes. A cutting edge is ground on the end of the spiraled flutes. The diameter of twist drills is measured in four different ways: Fractions of an inch, millimeters, letters, and numbers.
Industry:Aviation
A metal-cutting tool used to chamfer (bevel) the edges of a hole so the head of a countersunk rivet will be flush, or even, with the surface of the metal.
Industry:Aviation
A metal-cutting tool used to cut threads on the inside of a hole. A taper tap is used to start the threads in the hole; then a plug tap is used to cut threads to almost the full depth of the hole. If it is necessary that the threads extend to the very bottom of the hole, a bottoming tap is used. The threads cut by a bottoming tap are the same from one end to the other.
Industry:Aviation
A metal-cutting tool used to shave the head of a countersunk rivet, so that it is perfectly flush with the surface of the metal in which it is installed. The depth the micro-shaver cuts is adjusted with a micrometer-type scale.
Industry:Aviation
A metal-forming machine similar to a leaf, or cornice, brake. It is used to make straight bends across a piece of sheet metal.
The holding jaws of a box brake are made in the form of fingers. All four sides of a box can be formed on a box brake by allowing the sides that have been bent to fit between the fingers of the clamp while the last bends are being made. A box brake is also called a finger brake.
Industry:Aviation
A metalworking hand tool used to draw sheets of metal closely together before they are riveted.
A draw set is a steel bar with a hole drilled in one end to fit loosely over the shank of a rivet. The rivet is put through the holes in the sheets of metal, and the draw set is placed over the rivet shank. Then the rivet head is tapped lightly with the rivet set. This procedure draws the sheets of metal closely together before the rivet is actually driven.
