A coil spring wound in the form of a spiral, or helix. Helical springs can be wound in such a way that they can absorb either tensile or compressive loads.
Industry:Aviation
A coil whose inductance can be changed. The inductance of a coil is determined by the number of turns of wire and by the type of material used as the core. Changing either of these varies the inductance.
Industry:Aviation
A coil wound in such a way that its magnetic field opposes the field produced by another coil.
Industry:Aviation
A coined word meaning Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. A laser changes incoherent light, light whose vibrations do not have any consistent phase relationship, into coherent light, light whose vibrations are all in phase.
The light beam from a laser is highly concentrated, very narrow, and has an extremely high intensity. High-power lasers produce a great deal of heat in an extremely small area, and laser technology is opening new doors in all aspects of science.
Industry:Aviation
A cold wind blowing downslope. Fall wind differs from a foehn (see foehn) in that the air is initially cold enough to remain relatively cold despite the heating from the compression it received during its descent.
Industry:Aviation
A collection of tiny droplets of water suspended, or floating, in the air. A cloud forms when invisible water vapor in the air condenses and becomes droplets of visible liquid water.
Industry:Aviation
A color code used to show the amount of resistance and the resistance tolerance of a composition resistor. Three or four colored bands are placed around one end of the resistor. The band nearest the end of the resistor indicates the first significant digit in the resistance. The second band is for the second significant digit. The third band shows the number of zeros to add to the two significant digits. The fourth band shows the tolerance of the resistance in percentage of the nominal value. The colors and their meanings are:
Industry:Aviation
A color produced by combining two primary colors in equal proportions. Green is a secondary color made by mixing equal amounts of two primary colors, yellow and blue.
Industry:Aviation
A colored line that runs the length of a piece of flexible hose. A lay line is used to indicate whether or not the hose was twisted during installation. If the lay line spirals around the hose, the hose is twisted.
