A soldered connection in electrical wiring in which the wires were moved before the solder solidified.
A cold-solder joint has a granular appearance, little physical strength, and a high electrical resistance. Cold-solder joints are undesirable and must be reheated to melt the solder. The solder must then be allowed to solidify completely before the joint is moved.
Industry:Aviation
A solderless, crimped-on connector used to join two wire ends. The splice connector is made in the form of an insulated metal tube. The insulation is stripped from the ends of the wires to be spliced, and the bare wire is slipped into the tube. The tube is then crimped onto the wire. A solderless splice connector forms a joint that is physically as strong as the wire, and it has an extremely low electrical resistance.
Industry:Aviation
A solenoid-type switch designed to be kept energized by current flowing through its coil for an indefinite period of time.
The battery contactor in an aircraft electrical system is a continuous-duty solenoid. Current flows through its coil all of the time the battery is connected to the electrical system.
Industry:Aviation
A solid aircraft rivet made of 2017 or 2024 aluminum alloy. These rivets are too hard to drive in the condition they are received from the manufacturer, and they must be heat-treated to soften them. They are heated in a furnace and then quenched in water. Immediately after quenching, they are soft, but within a few hours at room temperature, they become quite hard.
Hardening can be delayed for several days by immediately placing the rivets in a subfreezing icebox and holding them at this low temperature until they are used.
Industry:Aviation
A solid carbon residue left when all the volatile parts of a mineral oil have been removed by heat. Coke in an engine is a contaminant, and it must be removed.
Industry:Aviation
A solid form whose ends are circular and whose sides are parallel. The volume of a cylinder is found by the formula:
: V = 0.7854 D2 H
: V = Cylinder volume in cubic inches
: 0.7854 = A constant π ÷ 4
: D = Cylinder diameter, or bore in inches
: H = Cylinder height, or stroke in inches
Industry:Aviation
A solid geometric figure which has six square sides. All the angles in a cube are right angles (90° angles), and all of the sides have the same length.
Industry:Aviation
A solid shape formed by rotating a right triangle about one of the legs which forms the right angle.
Industry:Aviation
A solid with a curved surface, like a ball. All points on the surface of the sphere are the same distance from a point within the sphere called its center.
