A turbofan engine with some of its low-pressure compressor blades extended. These extended blades act as a fan and force air around the outside of the gas-generator portion of the engine. Most modern turbofan engines are forward-fan engines.
Industry:Aviation
A turbofan engine with the fan constructed as an extension of some of the turbine blades, rather than as an extension of the compressor blades. This fan pulls large volumes of air around the outside of the gas generator portion of the engine.
Industry:Aviation
A turbojet or turbofan engine whose exhaust nozzle is mounted on a swivel in such a way that it may be rotated in flight to produce forward, vertically upward, or rearward thrust.
Industry:Aviation
A turboprop engine in which the propeller reduction gears are driven by the same shaft which drives the compressor for the gas generator.
Industry:Aviation
A turboprop engine whose allowable output power is less than the engine is physically capable of producing. Below a specific density altitude, the engine is limited by the amount of torque the airframe can tolerate. Above this altitude, the engine is limited by the exhaust gas temperature.
Industry:Aviation
A turbulent cloud formation found on the lee of some large mountain barriers. The air in the cloud rotates about an axis parallel to the range, and rotor clouds indicate the possibility of violent turbulence.
Industry:Aviation
A turn in which an aircraft changes its direction at a rate of 3° per second (360° in two minutes) for low-or medium-speed aircraft. For high-speed aircraft, the standard-rate turn is 1 1/2° per second (360° in four minutes).
Industry:Aviation
A twin-engine airplane with both engines mounted in the fuselage. One is installed as a tractor in the front of the cabin, and the other as a pusher behind the cabin. The empennage is mounted on booms.
Industry:Aviation
A twist drill of the correct size to drill a hole to be tapped. There is a correct tap drill for each size tap.
Industry:Aviation
A twisting force. A torsional force is made up of a tensile force and a compressive force acting at right angles to each other and at 45° to the axis of the object. Torsional forces are the main forces acting on propeller shafts and helicopter rotor shafts.
