An electric motor having both series and shunt field windings. The two windings are connected in such a way that the magnetic field produced by the shunt winding opposes the field produced by the series winding.
Industry:Aviation
An electric motor that operates on direct current.
Industry:Aviation
An electric motor totally enclosed in a housing. Explosive gases cannot get into the housing to explode, and sparks produced inside the housing cannot ignite gases on the outside.
Industry:Aviation
An electric motor which has both a series and a shunt field winding. A series motor has a high starting torque, but poor speed control. A shunt motor has a low starting torque, but good speed control. A compound motor has some of the good characteristics of both types of motors.
Industry:Aviation
An electric or pneumatic motor that drives a chuck which holds a twist drill. The best drill motors produce high torque, and their speed can be controlled.
Industry:Aviation
An electrical cable made up of individually insulated wires. A bundled cable is tied together with lacing cord or with special plastic wire-wrapping straps.
Industry:Aviation
An electrical charge that can exist on the plates of a capacitor or on an insulated object. A negative electrostatic charge is caused by an accumulation of electrons, and a positive charge is caused by a lack of electrons.
Industry:Aviation
An electrical circuit containing four impedances connected in such a way that their schematic diagram forms a square. One pair of diagonally opposite corners is connected to an input device, and the other two corners are connected to the output device.
Industry:Aviation
An electrical circuit in which a tapped resistor or a series of resistors is installed across a voltage source to provide various output voltages. The sum of the voltage drops across each of the resistances in a voltage divider is the same as the voltage across the entire resistance.
Industry:Aviation
An electrical circuit in which all of the opposition to the flow of electrons is caused by circuit resistance. In a resistive circuit, the current and voltage are in phase.
