Extreme turbulence found at high altitude. Clear air turbulence is created when a difference in the temperature causes a violent movement of the air. CAT cannot be seen, because there is no moisture at the altitude at which it occurs. In the lower altitudes, where there is moisture, turbulence in the air causes recognizable cloud patterns.
Industry:Aviation
Extremely fine flakes of aluminum suspended in a vehicle such as an oil. Aluminum paste is mixed with clear dope to make aluminum-pigmented dope.
Industry:Aviation
Fabric in which all of the threads run in the same direction. These threads are often bound with a few fibers which cross them at right angles, just enough to hold the yarns together and prevent their bunching.
Industry:Aviation
Fabric in which each warp thread passes over one fill thread and under the next. Plain-weave fabric normally has the same strength in both warp and fill directions.
Industry:Aviation
Fabric in which the warp threads pass under one fill thread and over several more. Satin-weave fabrics are used when the lay-up must be made over complex shapes.
Industry:Aviation
Fast-moving consumable items, usually with a unit cost of $50.00 or less. Expendable parts include nuts, bolts, gaskets, abrasives, and glues.
Industry:Aviation
Faulty, or not operating as it should.
Industry:Aviation
Feedback of an electrical signal from the circuit output to the circuit input, with a phase opposite the phase of the signal on the input. Degeneration stabilizes the output of a circuit, decreases circuit distortion, and improves the frequency response of the circuit.
Industry:Aviation
Ferromagnetic material that is easy to magnetize and demagnetize. Only a small coercive (demagnetizing) force is needed to remove any magnetism from the material. Low-carbon steel is a soft magnetic material.
Industry:Aviation
Fibers in a piece of composite material oriented in such a way that they can sustain loads in two directions.
