The angle, measured at the transmitting antenna, between the angle of propagation of a radio wave and a horizontal plane.
Industry:Aviation
The angular difference between the direction an aircraft is headed in flight and the direction it actually moves over the ground.
Industry:Aviation
The angular east-west measurement of location on the earth’s surface. The surface of the earth is divided by 360 meridians, or lines of longitude, that pass through both the north and south poles. The meridian passing through the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, near London, England, is 0° longitude and is called the prime meridian. On the opposite side of the earth is the 180° meridian. Longitude east of the prime meridian is called east longitude, and that west of the prime meridian is called west longitude.
Industry:Aviation
The angular measurement of distance on the surface of the earth, north and south of the equator. Latitude is measured in degrees, minutes, and seconds, and parallels of latitude cut the earth into imaginary parallel slices. The equator, which is zero degrees latitude, forms a belt around the center of the earth. The north pole is 90° north latitude, and the south pole is 90° south latitude.
Industry:Aviation
The angular relationship between voltage and current in an electrical circuit. Voltage and current are in phase when they both pass through zero, moving in the same direction at the same time. If changes in current occur before changes in the voltage, the current is leading the voltage. But if changes in the current occur after changes in the voltage, the current is lagging the voltage, or the voltage is leading the current.
Industry:Aviation
The anode of an electron tube. A high positive voltage on the plate attracts electrons from the cathode. This flow of electrons is controlled by the voltage on grids located between the cathode and the plate.
Industry:Aviation
The answer found when one number is divided by another.
Industry:Aviation
The answer in a multiplication problem.
Industry:Aviation
sum
The answer to an addition problem when two or more numbers are added together. In the problem 2 + 4 = 6, the number 6 is the sum.
Industry:Aviation
The antidetonation rating of a fuel which has a higher critical pressure and temperature than iso-octane (a rating of 100). Iso-octane which has been treated with varying amounts of tetraethyl lead is used as the reference. Aviation gasoline antidetonation ratings above 100 are called performance numbers.
