The function of an automated air traffic control system which alerts radar controllers of existing or pending situations which the program recognizes as requiring immediate attention and/or action.
Industry:Aviation
The function of keeping the RPM of all the engines in a multiengine aircraft exactly the same. One engine is used as the master engine, and the speed of each of the other engines, called slave engines, is compared to it. The propeller governor on each slave engine is automatically adjusted, to change the pitch of its propeller to maintain an RPM the same as that of the master engine.
Industry:Aviation
The fuselage of a supersonic airplane built so the combined frontal area of the fuselage and the wing form a smooth curve from nose to tail. An airplane with an area-rule fuselage has the minimum transonic drag.
Industry:Aviation
The gas generator portion of a gas turbine engine. The core engine consists of the portion of the compressor used to supply air for the operation of the engine, the diffuser, the combustors, the turbine nozzle, and the stages of the turbine used to drive the compressor. The core engine provides the high-velocity gas used to drive the fan and any free turbines that provide power for propellers, rotors, pumps, or generators.
Industry:Aviation
The gas law which states that there will always be the same number of molecules of gas in a container when the gas is held at a uniform pressure and temperature. Dalton’s law explains the partial pressure of the gases which make up the air in our atmosphere.
Industry:Aviation
The gaseous state of a material. Water is normally a liquid, but when it evaporates, it turns into invisible water vapor. Certain metals can be turned into a vapor in the intense heat of an electric arc and the low pressure of a vacuum.
Industry:Aviation
The gear attached to the power source in a gear train. The drive gear meshes with and drives the driven gear. If the drive gear is smaller than the driven gear, the driven gear turns slower than the drive gear.
Industry:Aviation
The gear in a gear train that meshes with and is driven by the drive gear.
Industry:Aviation
The general term for dry particles suspended in the atmosphere. Lithometeors include dust, haze, smoke, and sand.
