A direct current indicating instrument in which the pointer deflection is proportional to the ratio between the current flowing in a reference coil and that flowing in the measuring coil.
Industry:Aviation
A direction across, or at right angles to, the longitudinal axis of an aircraft.
Industry:Aviation
A discharge of electricity that appears as a bluish-purple glow on the surface of a conductor when the voltage on the conductor exceeds a certain critical value. Corona is caused by the ionization of the gases surrounding the conductor.
Industry:Aviation
A discharge of static electricity often seen on airplanes flying through stormy weather. Static electricity from the clouds collects on the airplane structure and discharges from sharp points in the form of visible light.
Industry:Aviation
A discrete electrical component which provides a given amount of resistance to a circuit. The wire leads of an axial-lead resistor extend from the ends in a direction parallel to the axis of the resistor. The resistance value and tolerance is indicated by a series of colored bands
Industry:Aviation
A disk of metal with a hole in its center. A flat washer, also called a plain washer, is used under the head of a bolt to provide a bearing surface. It can also be used under a nut to make a surface for the nut to turn against so that it will not dig into the material contacted by the nut.
Industry:Aviation
A disk of metal with a hole in its center. Plain washers are used to provide a smooth surface on which a nut can ride, and to fill the space between a surface and the nut to adjust for the grip length of a bolt.
Industry:Aviation
A display indication given to the pilot by the traffic alert and collision avoidance system (TCAS II) recommending a maneuver to increase vertical separation relative to an intruding aircraft. Positive, negative, and vertical speed limit advisories constitute the resolution advisories. A resolution advisory is also classified as corrective or preventive.
Industry:Aviation
A display tube used in oscilloscopes, digital computers, and television receivers. An electron gun emits a stream of electrons that is attracted to a positively charged inner surface of the face of the tube. Acceleration grids and focusing grids speed the movement of the electrons and shape the beam into a pin-point size. Electrostatic or electromagnetic forces caused by deflection plates or coils move the beam over the face of the tube. The inside of the face is treated with a phosphor material that emits light when the beam of electrons strikes it.
Industry:Aviation
A disposable filter element used in an aircraft fuel or lubrication system. These filters are of the depth type and are made of cellulose fibers that trap and hold most of the contaminants in the fuel or oil that passes through them.
