indigo children

Children who are said to be a new step in the evolution of humanity. Their characteristics haven't been codified but they are usually thought of as being empathetic, highly creative, unwilling to bend to authority and socially awkward. Some believe that these children possess a range of supernatural abilities. The name comes from synesthete Nancy Ann Tappe who claimed that the spiritually attuned could see an indigo aura around such children.

The phenomenon has been widely dismissed as pseudoscientific and baseless. The identifying characteristics suffer from the Forer effect, where they are vague enough to apply to almost anybody. Furthermore, many of the indigo children are likely candidates for ADHD or other psychological problems, and their parents desire to have them classified as "special" rather than "mentally unwell" can delay much needed treatment for the child.
