On 11 April 2012 an undersea earthquake struck near the Indonesian province of Aceh measuring at a magnitude of 8.6. There were initial fears that it would cause a subsequent tsunami, but warnings were cancelled across the Indian Ocean. The 2012 Indian Ocean earthquake comes just over a year after the devastating Japan earthquake and tsunami, and measures as the 11th strongest earthquake since 1900.
